Ghosted is a movie that stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas as two extremely different people who fall in love while trying to stop a global threat. A mixture of romance and action, sounds like a recipe for success, right? Wrong and I'm here to tell you why, as if I'm an abacus,
- Plot: 3/10
- Acting: 5/10
- Direction: 6/10
- Cinematography: 7/10
- Soundtrack: 4/10
- Originality: 4/10
- Emotion: 1/10
- Overall: 4.2/10
Let's start with the plot, which is the backbone of any movie. Well, this movie has one, but probably suffers from osteoporosis. It is so predictable that I could tell how things would turn out 23 minutes into the movie, and I was right. And trust me, it's not because I'm a genius, it's because the plot is that flat. It's a limp and lifeless story that tries to be a mix of action and romance. Early into the movie there's a plot twist that I think deserves some credit, it's not exactly a twist because the movie keeps hinting it very obviously and that's why I like it, the plot builds up to the coming twist, it makes sense logically and some movies just don't for the sake of the twist being surprising.
The acting is another major flaw of this movie. Chris Evans and Ana de Armas are both talented and attractive actors, but they have zero chemistry in this movie. Their dialogue is so awkward and unnatural that it makes me cringe. The rest of the cast is equally bland and forgettable, except for the villain, who is so over-the-top and ridiculous that he made me laugh. One thing I actually enjoyed about the movie are the action scenes, hand to hand combat scenes were pretty good and that's like the sole reason for that five.
The direction is not much better than the acting. The movie has a sleek and stylish look, but it lacks any personality or flair. It feels like a generic action-romance movie that could have been made by anyone. The director does not seem to have any vision or passion for the movie, and it shows. The movie is boring and dull, despite having some exotic locations and some flashy shots.
The cinematography is the only thing that I can praise in this movie. It's the only aspect that shows some quality and creativity. The movie has some beautiful shots of the scenery and the action scenes, creating some visual appeal. But still there were some distracting use of bad CGI and green screen shots.
The soundtrack is another disappointment in this movie. It's a random collection of songs that do not fit the tone or the mood of the movie. It does not enhance any scene or emotion, and it does not stick in your mind. It feels like the music was chosen without any thought or care, just to fill in the silence.
The originality is another thing that this movie lacks. It tries something kind of different by combining action and romance but it does not offer anything new or fresh to either genre, and it feels like a cheap imitation. It also tries to convey some messages about the difference between being needy and attentive also of being negligent and independent. Which are great but I didn't quite feel how the characters grow into understand those differences.
The emotion is the final nail in the coffin for this movie. It did not make me feel anything, except boredom and disappointment. I did not care about the characters or their relationship, and I did not feel any tension or excitement. The movie is supposed to be a fun and thrilling ride, but it's more like a dull and tedious chore.
In conclusion, it felt like drinking fizzled out soda out of a half filled, dented can. It all comes down to preference and taste though, yours could be different from mine. Overall it had a promising cast and concept but it failed to deliver, it was predictable, boring and forgettable.
