FSR 3 on Consoles? A look at AMD's answer to DLSS 3

AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a cutting-edge upscaling technology that boosts the performance and image quality of games. FSR was first released in 2021 and has since been updated to FSR 2 and now FSR 3, which is expected to launch in September 2023. FSR 3 introduces a new feature called frame generation, which uses AMD's Fluid Motion Frames (FMF) technology to create additional frames for higher framerates. In this blog post, we will explain what FSR 3 is, how it works, and what it means for console gamers.

What is FSR 3 and how does it work?

FSR 3 is the latest version of AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution, which is an upscaling technology that improves the performance and image quality of games. Upscaling is a technique that renders a game at a lower resolution and then scales it up to a higher resolution, such as from 1080p to 4K. This reduces the workload on the GPU and increases the framerate, but it can also introduce blurriness or artifacts in the image. FSR 3 aims to solve this problem by using a combination of super resolution temporal upscaling and frame generation.

Super resolution temporal upscaling is a process that analyzes multiple frames of a game and uses an advanced algorithm to reconstruct a higher resolution image with more details and sharpness. FSR 3 offers four quality modes for super resolution upscaling: Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance. Each mode has a different balance between image quality and performance, depending on the user's preference.

Frame generation is a new feature in FSR 3 that uses AMD's Fluid Motion Frames (FMF) technology to generate additional frames for higher framerates. FMF uses optical flow and temporal game data to create smooth transitions between frames, reducing stuttering and judder. Frame generation can be used with any of the super resolution upscaling modes, and it can provide up to 2x boost in framerate. Frame generation is especially useful in very demanding situations, such as gaming at 4K with maximum ray tracing settings or when the CPU is limiting the framerate.

FSR 3 also includes UI processing, which is a feature that minimizes the impact of frame generation on the in-game interface. UI processing detects and preserves the UI elements in the game, such as menus, text, or icons, and prevents them from being affected by frame generation. This ensures that the UI remains clear and responsive.

When will FSR 3 be available for gamers?

AMD has announced that FSR 3 will be available for gamers in September 2023. The first two games that will support FSR 3 are Forspoken by Square Enix and Immortals of Aveum by Ascendant Studios and Electronic Arts. These games will receive patches that will enable FSR 3 support in early September. AMD has also revealed that more games will support FSR 3 in the near future, such as Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty by CD Projekt Red. Additionally, AMD has partnered with Epic Games to create a plug-in for Unreal Engine that will allow game developers to easily implement FSR 3 in their games.

AMD has also stated that they are working on a way to enable FSR 3 for any DirectX 11 or 12 game, which means that thousands of existing and upcoming games will be able to benefit from FSR 3 technology. This update is expected to come out in the first quarter of 2024.

Will FSR 3 provide any benefits to console gamers?

Based on the information available, FSR 3 is a feature that is mainly designed for PC. AMD has released the recommended specifications for FSR 3, which support every GPU from RX 5700 and above. RX 5700 has a similar performance to PS5, which is good, but the recommended GPU is RX 6000 series and above, which are more powerful than PS5 and often Xbox Series X as well, which is not good.

Another thing is that AMD has stated that for FSR 3 to work, the game should run comfortably at 60 fps, which is not the case for most games that are next gen only and use next gen features. Therefore, even if we get FSR 3 on consoles, it will probably be very rare that we actually get to experience it in action.

Conclusion

FSR 3 is the next generation of AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution, which is an upscaling technology that boosts the performance and image quality of games. FSR 3 introduces frame generation, which uses AMD's Fluid Motion Frames technology to create additional frames for higher framerates. FSR 3 will be available for gamers in September 2023, and it will be supported by many games in the near future. But don't keep much expectations for it's availability on consoles.

Linear Time and Its Paradoxes

Time is one of the most fundamental aspects of our experience, but also one of the most mysterious and controversial. How do we understand time? Is it a fixed and objective reality, or a subjective and relative construct? Is time travel possible, and if so, what are the implications for causality and free will? In this article, we will explore the concept of linear time and its paradoxes, and explain why it is unlikely to be true. What is Linear Time? Linear time is the idea that time has a beginning and an end, and that it flows in one direction from past to future. This view of time is influenced by the Christian worldview, which posits that time was created by God at the moment of Genesis, and that it will end at the Last Judgement. Linear time implies that there is a clear distinction between past, present and future, and that events are ordered by their temporal sequence. Linear time is also compatible with some scientific theories, such as the Big Bang model of cosmology, which s...

Warp Drive: A Scientific Possibility or a Science Fiction Fantasy?

Warp drive is a term that refers to a hypothetical propulsion system that would allow a spacecraft to travel faster than light. The concept of warp drive has been popularized by many science fiction works, especially the Star Trek series, but is it possible in reality? What is warp drive and how does it work? Warp drive is based on the idea of distorting or warping the space-time continuum around a spacecraft, creating a bubble of space that moves faster than light relative to the rest of space. The spacecraft itself would not move faster than light within the bubble, but would appear to do so from an external observer's perspective. The idea of warp drive is inspired by Einstein's theory of general relativity, which describes how gravity affects space and time. According to this theory, massive objects like stars and planets can bend or curve space-time around them, creating gravitational fields. Similarly, a warp drive would manipulate space-time by using some form of exotic ...

The Great Filter: A Possible Explanation for the Fermi Paradox

One of the most intriguing questions in science and philosophy is whether we are alone in the universe. Are there other intelligent civilizations out there, or are we the only ones? If there are others, why haven't we detected any signs of them? This is known as the Fermi paradox, named after the physicist Enrico Fermi, who famously asked "Where are they?" in 1950. There are many possible answers to this paradox, but one of the most intriguing and unsettling ones is the idea of the Great Filter. This is a hypothesis proposed by economist Robin Hanson in 1996, which suggests that there is some extremely difficult or improbable step in the evolution of life that prevents most planets from developing advanced civilizations capable of interstellar communication and travel. The Great Filter could be anything from the origin of life itself, to the emergence of multicellular organisms, to the development of technology, to the avoidance of self-destruction. The idea is that there...
